Apparently, people in the 1940s and 1950s had a tendency to report their dreams as occurring in black and white. This rarely occurs in the US today, though it has occurred in other places around the world when the dominant visual mediums were black and white. The theory is that this is a phenomenon of reporting and memory, not actual change in dreamscapes, but it is fascinating none-the-less.
The Times has an article on John Searle that talks some about his new book. Searle is one of those interesting cognitive science types who find joy in repackaging their academic theories for a wider audience and I find him an interesting public figure, though I am not saying I agree with him. Neither is the Times article, actually it is just a little bit hostile.
