Depressing things on Monday morning

Gaza was firing rockets at Israel and Israel has stopped suppling power to Gaza (their only power plant has been shut down). They are running out of power and medications. I am far less than qualified to say anything else about the situation, but each of the links will take you to someone who I hope knows more than me, since they are writing about it.

Schools in Afghanistan have been in the news lately. There is a new article in Time talking about the problems getting and keeping girls in school and I've been meaning to link to a report from The Washington Monthly about schools and other programs in Afghanistan that are actually working and the sad fact that these effective measures are all too often losing funding.

Update: Remember when I acknowledged that I didn't know what to make about the Gaza story, well there are sources that are saying that Israel has not changed the power they are sending Gaza (about two-thirds), but they are not selling Gaza fuel and that it is Hamas who has made the decision to shut down the power plant in protest. However, this side of the story is linked to by The Corner and seems extremely unbiased.
