Your Parents Are Awesome

This one goes out especially to vgjcd, Magnolia Sitter’s own big boss of retro game machines (feel free to use that on your business cards). Anyway, remember that crappy Intellivision/Atari system your cheapskate parents sprung for, when what you really wanted was the [ -whatever your friend’s had] system? Mine was the Intellivision and while I was happy to get it, I can vaguely remember wanting the Atari 2600 that the kids down the street had so much I could taste it. Adding insult to injury, I’m pretty sure I had the Sears & Roebuck, “Super Video Arcade” version of the system. The 7th rule of childhood is of course that here has never been anything remotely cool about Sears.

As it turns out though, I have learned a few things in the intervening years: (a) kids are stupid and (b) your (my) parents are awesome. Not only was the Intellivision vastly superior to the Atari 2600 harware-wise, but those old video game systems that we remember as “crappy” were (as the kids say), “dependant upon the infusion of mad bling.”

Today on Joystiq, you can peruse an article which recounts prices of those antiquated sytems at launch both in original US$ and in today’s dollars. Here's the relevant data:

Year of Release:         1980
System:                        Intellivision
Original Price US$:   299.99
Price Today US$:       759.36

Thanks Mom and Dad!

I'm guessing that the atari 800xl went for roughly the same price as the C64:

1982 Commodore 64 595 1207.04

Except my parents bought us the french version which was likely more expensive.

I'll remember to thank them profusely. That was also one of my best Christmases.

Although it did set me on the path that has ultimitely led to my spending 10hours a day in a darkened dungeon, slowing losing touch with my humanity.
