Necrotheory: gimmie some skin

“Anthropodermic bibliopegy” is smart guy talk for books bound in human skin, and apparently it’s not nearly as uncommon as you might expect (or want). In my fair city alone, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia library has four such books, including one with a visible tattoo. The practice dates to the middle ages, but it seems to have really caught on with 19th century physicians -- who radically re-defined the idea of the meta-narrative by binding their anatomy books in the finest dude-hide. To learn more, check out Dan Alban’s original article in the Harvard Law Record.

Also, (for the dark and despairing in the house) as of Friday “Necrotheory” was a valid, unclaimed Yahoo user id so you can snatch that up and get Goth for Xmas.

Happy Holidays!
