The other Nobel Prize
Turkey has jailed a former Nobel Peace Prize winner for supposed connections to PKK, the Kurdish political party and militia force that was in the news recently because of the unrest at the Turkish/Iraqi (Kurdistani) border. If you want more information about PKK, you should look here, though they have also gotten press for their egalitarian nature, despite the unfortunately sexist nature of much of that coverage. This article gets at some of the contradictions inherent in an organization that supports women and a historically disadvantaged minority, but engages in terrorism. I am trying to figure out the political ins and outs because it seems that, with the standoff with Turkey a few weeks ago this issues have become very important, but I really do not know enough about it right now to take any sort of position.
