India is sponsoring a system of collaboration over satellite links to African teaching hospitals that will hopefully enable faster medical progress and education there. Right now only Ethiopia is involved, but Nigeria and Libya are supposed to be involved soon and India is making this a central part of its effort to use satellite hubs and fiber optics to link African countries to each other and to India.
On the subject of African interest in forwarding the science in their own countries, this blog post from Chris Blattman concerning the respect found for proper social science studies even among Imams in Liberia and what that means is worth reading.
