For the kiddies

I love studies, on pretty much everything, but especially human behavior and the way children work. I've got a few gems today to interest my sister and sundry other friends who have procreated.

Evidence that sleep is outrageously important to development just keeps popping up and so we are finally getting advice on what techniques are helpful in encouraging good sleep habits. I don't know what this means about me; sleep was not my favorite activity when I was young.

A developmental psychologist is entering the discussion about why humans may have evolved such a long adolescent phase and what it says about us. The book is called Why Youth is Not Wasted on the Young, so you can guess his positive take on the whole issue. He's firmly against crotchety old man logic. Also, if we are talking brains, Edge has a whole thing about the uniqueness of the human brain that is mostly focused on questioning widespread antagonism to the idea in scientific circles.

Slate turns behaviorist about your children, but they do seem to be giving decent advice.
