Hooray!

If you remember, the opposition to Musharraf started to gain steam last year when some of what he was doing was ruled unconstitutional by the Pakistani judiciary; the head justice was subsequently put on house arrest. Now he has been released and it is beginning to look like Bhutto's party is going to be making a whole-hearted effort to reform some of what has been destroyed by Musharraf, like the power of the judiciary to enforce law and the unfortunate habit of throwing political enemies into prison. The new prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, had actually been imprisoned because of his opposition. Of course, this makes our government and its support of Musharraf look even less justifiable then it already did (a feat that is not exactly easy), but it is wonderful news and I am not even going to go look for articles that give a more nuanced viewpoint including things like the continuing economic problems in Pakistan. I'm just going to enjoy the feeling that something in the world is improving for a little while and try to make sure I know how to pronounce the new prime minister's name.

Update: This means that it is still going to be a little while before I put up the Tibet post I have been gathering links for, I'll try to post it tonight, when it won't start my day off badly. Also, I am not blogging about Iraq right now, but I am praying for my brother, who is supposed to be back in the States for my birthday.
