Scientific American has published an article claiming that the US is not very far away from being able to get a large slice of our power needs met through solar "power plants." Brad Plummer links to it and comments on some of the implications. One of the most interesting is that the Southwest, the obvious place for this sort of project, would benefit tremendously because both (obviously) hydroelectric and nuclear power require massive amounts of water that the Southwest simply does not have to give.
