Random Beauty

To link this post together, I must end up explaining some bit of the segues that shape my browsing experiences. This morning when I sat down at the computer to eat my breakfast before working I did not want to read anything about politics, so I started with fashion and the woman who writes this particular blog had just been to an Olafur Eliasson show at the SFMOMA which remind me of Eliasson and this show at the Tate Modern, which I saw pictures of years ago and have always thought looked gorgeous. The picture is for those of you who never follow links.

But, of course, it didn't end there because all of this art has reminded me of an art gallery that I wandered to in Singapore (where I spent much time fascinated by the art and food) and the artist Tung Yue Nang who, among more traditionally (in the West) serious art, does still life that is focused on bright colors and the accoutrement of female preparation. Hair sticks and bowls of makeup take on incredible significance against red or green backgrounds and I loved these paintings with a fierceness that I still cannot explain except to say that I could look at them forever. It makes no sense whatsoever, but I am putting up an image of one of his paintings in addition to the link to the gallery where I had a blast spending 40 minutes talking to a woman about her story and this artist's dual Malay/Chinese history even though she was well aware that I had nowhere near enough money to consider a single thing in the shop.
