One of my new favorite blogs, which deals with landscape architecture issues, has a post (that I meant to link to over the holidays) about the possibility of massive solar power generating farms being placed throughout the desert in North Africa to provide power for Europe and Northern Africa.
The concept is fascinating and the author traces several of the possible outcomes from such a project, especially how it could politically and environmentally affect North Africa.
