Mag Sitters Rockin’ The Wheeze

No man, not the weasel - the wheeze.

The American Lung Association recently released their “State of the Air 2006” report which focuses on particle pollution (soot) in the air, as well as ozone levels (smog) across the United States. The top 25 towns and regions that are most polluted by year-round particle pollution are as follows:

1. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, Calif.
2. Bakersfield, Calif.
3. Pittsburgh-New Castle, Pa.
4. Visalia-Porterville, Calif.
5. Fresno-Madera, Calif.
6. Detroit-Warren-Flint, Mich.
7. Hanford-Corcoran, Calif.
8. Cleveland-Akron-Elyria, Ohio
9. Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman, Ala.
9. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, Ga.-Ala.
11. Chicago-Naperville-Michigan City, Ill.-Ind.-Wis.
12. Weirton-Steubenville, W.Va.-Ohio
13. York-Hanover-Gettysburg, Pa.
13. St. Louis-St. Charles-Farmington, Mo.-Ill.
13. Cincinnati-Middletown-Wilmington, Ohio-Ky.-Ind.
16. New York-Newark-Bridgeport, N.Y.-N.J.-Conn.-Pa.
16. Lancaster, Pa.
18. Merced, Calif.
18. Canton-Massillon, Ohio
20. Charleston, W.Va.
21. Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia, D.C.-Md.-Va.-W.Va.
22. Reading, Pa.
22. Hagerstown-Martinsburg, Md.-W.Va.
24. Indianapolis-Anderson-Columbus, Ind.
25. Louisville-Elizabethtown-Scottsburg, Ky.-Ind.

It would appear that most of the MagSit community lives deep in the hack and cough region.

As someone who has lived in or near no less than four of the top 25 cities, I can honestly say my boogers haven't varied in intensity/color/size etc. from location to location. Nor have they lessened when in "cleaner" cities - such as New Orleans.

But having grown up just outside of #3, perhaps you have a certain booger baseline that life in less poluted cities has yet to effect?

A) I never grew up outside of da 'burgh (#3).

b) I grew up in southcentral PA (#13 and #16).

c) I live in Hoosierville (#24).

I've traveled to "less polluted" cities as well as those on the pristine list. From my scientific observations, there is no correlation between pollution and boogers. At least my own boogers, that is.

Please forgive me. I am from #16. My understanding of the country is is as follows:

First, there's Jersey, which is great. Jersey also has some outlaying districts called Philadelphia and New York that aren't too bad either.

West of Philadelphia, there's some other stuff, I'm pretty sure there's not much there, but it sure takes a long time to fly over. Apparently, this is where both "south central PA" and "Pittsburgh" live.

Finally, you have California, which is where television comes from. Occasionally, California demands that we send it some bright young people to stoke the television furnaces. This is dirty, dangerous work, but absolutely vital if we wish to maintain our "Desperate Housewives" trade imbalance with the rest of the world.
