A few days ago Rachel posted a link to Orson Scott Card complaining about the amount of math education that his local public schools were requiring and the general badness of high school English programs. This resulted in a fairly vigorous discussion between Juicifer, Monkey Courage and Rachel about the relative values of English (specifically grammar) and Mathematics in education.
Not surprisingly, I disagreed with everyone.
So I wrote a response that I was going to post in the comments. But by the end I was so invested in it that I actually wanted people to read it and throw things at me. So here’s a link to the whole long mess. If you’ve been following the thread it should be easy to catch up on. If not you’ll have to read Rachel’s original post and the comments as well as the Card article to which she links. I am, by the way a bit cheeky (so to speak) in the comment. Rest assured that no insult is intended.

I had to respond. But I did so in the original blog.
