I would like to point out that the United States military is composed of near a million people some of whom include my brother, Captain Ian Fishback , and this guy who you should read occasionally. Brian's cousin is a Lieutenant Colonel (and now commander of the battalion featured in Gunner Palace) in the US Army and we went to his wedding last year, where I can assure we spoke to quite a few members of the military, several of whom had just come back from Iraq and spent most of their time talking about how their experiences helping schools were the best part of their tours and expressing a great deal of frustration at the insensitivity of the administration to the Iraqi people.
Yes, there are problems with our military, but it is an institution where people risk their lives in service to the US because we ask them to. All citizens may not agree with what they are sent to do and some of the people in every institution are jerks, but caviler denigration of the US military based on one comment is sloppy and, truthfully, hurtful thinking.
