Reactions of the Credible

I don't know what it means that, more and more, the opinion writers that I find myself most in concert with are the very moderate Republicans. Of course it may have something to do with the deep confusion the Republican Party seems to be going through about what it means to be Republican. Also, it may have to do with the fact that, more and more, I tend to believe that the only people willing to care about truth instead of political faith or expediency are moderates on most issues. I had a friend tell me recently that she only had time to worry about the things she knew intimately and couldn't see making proclaimations on the rest. I think if we all did that politics would be much cleaner in this country.

Anyway, now that I have bored everyone I am going to link to two op-ed pieces, both by moderate and smart Republicans (though every now and again Brooks can come off as unconsidered in his rush to offer big conservative ideas). Here is David Brooks' NYT op-ed and here is Andrew Sullivan's in The Sunday Times.

Money Quote:
What people want now is someone who can make the federal government work again. They want an executive who can fight a war and keep them safe.
