Too Poor for a Taxi

I'm not sure what to say about this article. I agree with most things that seem to increase human dignity, even though there are often arguments to be made, but I am amazed at the estimated 100,000 people who get their living from hand pulling rickshaws.  Also, is it going to put these calculations in jeopardy, or is he talking about bicycle rickshaws , which we have in the States and nobody seems to mind.  There are even those who celebrate them.

One final note about gasoline prices.3.20 a gallon equates to twenty cents a cup. It only buys the ability for a person or several people to travel a mile and a half in a few minutes.

Go find a rickshaw driver or horse and buggy that will deliver the same journey for a price 30 to 40 times as much and you have found a pretty good deal.

Dignity is a funny thing, eh? I tend to be on the side of the guys who are losing their jobs here. Though there is certainly a societal value to restricting services that are inherently destructive to their providers (i.e. prostitution), some wisdom and forethought might be helpful. Wiping out an industry that employs 100,000 people, limits automobile usage, and is chock full of cultural precedent strikes me as a bit...stupid.

As for the wee Frenchman, well, I can cozy up to a ban on dwarf tossing a bit more. But if he's still desperate to get tossed I suggest he head north. The Dutch (with their wooden shoes and affordably priced women) have never struck me as being a group that gets terribly worked up about human dignity.
